Tom Ford's 6 Rules Of Style For Men (Revisited)

tom ford

Fashion mogul and now filmmaker, Tom Ford oozes style with bold, sexy, and sophisticated aesthetic. He is most recognized for his role as creative director of Gucci before starting his eponymous brand. And that became equally successful as he subsequently sold it to Estée Lauder for $2.8 billion. That’s great because he knows how to make people look good and has inspired the folks here at TBR. So here are Ford’s six personal style tips, with our own take on it:

“The first rule is to relax. Style and fashion should enhance your life, not cause you stress. Find something that works for you and helps you clear your head.”

We love this and the take-away is that mindfulness is the foundation for it. You need to think and strategize your sartorial lifestyle. What do you stand for? What are you passionate about? And how do you want to come across when you meet your business associates, colleagues, bosses and partners? Meditate (there are plenty of good apps out there to guide you) and do yoga if you can. It helps to clear your mind and relax. Do other things to but do them in the healthy and moderated sense.

“The second rule is to invest in a few good white poplin shirts. A white shirt is a versatile piece that can be dressed up or down.”

Enough said. Sometimes simplicity just works and you can never go wrong in a white shirt. What you wear around it is the important part too, though. When the leather colour of your shoes match your belt and your watch strap, that’s a strong look for any viewer. It shows confidence and thoughtfulness.

“The third rule is to wear a collar bar with a suit and tie. This is a small detail that can make a big difference in your overall look.”

We love that suits and ties can still exude a certain charm but they can be style enhancers too. The collar bar is a Tom Ford staple. It looks great in any boardroom. But you can find other small details. Tie pins and boutonnieres work well for specific occasions. This sense of meticulousness will evoke trust and justify what you’re asking for when you negotiate. It also creates a positive sense of who you are.

“The fourth rule is to find a well-fitting black suit. A suit should make you feel confident and look sharp. Avoid trends like skinny lapels and short jackets.”

We always feel that tailored trumps ready-to-wear at all times. So this goes beyond the suit. Get the shirts and pants done right too. Comfort is Key: You should feel good and be able to move without restriction. Even if you do opt for the latter, a good tailor can advise you on the finer points of good fabric selection and then make small adjustments for a perfect fit.

“The fifth rule is to embrace the night. Night is the one time when men can really dress extravagantly. Don't be afraid to wear bold colors and patterns.”

Yes, we agree to some extent. Extravagant still needs to connect back to the first style rule; it’s about who you are. No sense wearing shocking pink if you’re a bank executive at a company ball, unless you’re trying to make a clear statement.

“The sixth rule is to wear fragrance. Fragrance is a great way to express your personality. Choose a scent that you love and wear it confidently.”

Fragrance definitely connects back to the first style rule. That said, we do love the fact that Ford marketed some amazing perfumes in his time. Oud Wood and Ombré Leather are amazing men’s fragrances.
